Asia Society presents Water and Oil: The Movies of Ang Lee; a complete retrospective from February 14-23 with select appearances by the filmmaker and collaborators.
Brokeback Mountain
Ang Lee, USA, 2005, 35mm, 134 min.
Presented on 35mm. Introduced by producer James Schamus and followed by a Q&A with Ang Lee.
Join us for the kickoff of our Ang Lee retrospective with a 20th-anniversary Valentine’s Day screening of all-time weepie Brokeback Mountain. The film was a meteoric success upon its release, garnering eight Academy Award nominations and three wins, making Lee the first person of color to receive the award for Best Director. Its staying power as a queer cultural touchstone— released ten years before the Supreme Court enshrined the right to gay marriage— has validated the initial hullabaloo over the film and led a new generation to embrace the enduring love story of its fictional cowboy icons (Just take a look at Letterboxd).
Adapted from a short story by E. Annie Proulx into a screenplay by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, the story begins in Wyoming, 1963. Ennis del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) take a summer gig herding sheep and fall in love. They have a chance to reunite each summer, but understanding the consequences of being out in their worlds and starting families of their own complicates matters. Anne Hathaway and Michelle Williams give shattering performances as Alma and Lureen, the respective wives of each, and the story’s tragic arc lands with tender, graceful flourish thanks to Lee’s sensitive direction and a vast landscape that swaddles its characters in green— a color Lee makes pointed use of throughout his filmography.
