Asia Society presents Water and Oil: The Movies of Ang Lee; a complete retrospective from February 14-23 with select appearances by the filmmaker and collaborators.
The Ice Storm
Ang Lee, US, 1997, 35mm, 112 min.
Presented on 35mm.
"The Ice Storm” author Rick Moody famously claimed that he thought this movie adaptation improved upon the book. Set in New Canaan, Connecticut in 1973, the story charts the fallout of the sexual revolution in the stifled heart of Nixon’s suburbia. The all-star 90s cast features Tobey Maguire, Sigourney Weaver, Kevin Kline, Elijah Wood, Christina Ricci, Katie Holmes and Joan Allen— who incidentally played Pat Nixon in Oliver Stone’s 1995 Nixon biopic— as sons, daughters, wives and husbands desperate to escape the dullness of their lives at any cost. Children play-act as adults and adults behave like children; what parades as liberation is just another mask for repression in the Ang-Lee-extended-universe of frustrated desire.
